RESPECT THE POLICE

Summary of the wrongdoing carried out against David Dessler
7 arrests, 103 days in jail, not one scintilla of evidence
Demand Letter, Lawsuit, Flat Hat

The approach I strongly recommend for those who believe the president deserves our full support:
My support for President Rowe
This approach is not the one that exists now. It runs against College tradition. If adopted, it would constitute a transformation of the school.

But I say, it is the only sensible approach. It is, for those working at William & Mary ethically and professionally demanded.

Everyone knows I am right. I am suggesting the following practice, which is the only sensible one at a university:

THE PRESIDENT SETS POLICY; THE UNIVERSITY FOLLOWS.

I give an example on that page of President Kenneth Pitzer telling the faculty at the last meeting of the 1962-1963 year, "I am creating a Department of Space Science." There were lots of objections. There were only objections.

You can, of course, complain about a president's decisions. But you cannot oppose them. You cannot form groups and develop policies that have the logic of defeating what the president proposes. You also cannot decide you are going to form yet another group, one which neither supports nor opposes the president, but watches the contest that has developed on campus and creates narratives they use to debate events and judge the administration. You cannot have a subset in this group who spend their time, I effect, wagering on the outcome. Will the president make it or not? I'm not aware of any money being bet. I am saying only that in this subset, which consists of faculty, they focus on predicting the fate of the administration, in particular, the president.

THE PRESIDENT'S PLAN IS "DIVERSITY ACCELERATES INNOVATION" AND EVERYONE AT THE COLLEGE EITHER
(1) ACCEPTS THIS GOAL AND WORKS TOWARD IT OR
(2) LEAVES THE COLLEGE.
