SOLUTION 4: EVERYONE ACCEPTS THAT THE BOARD UNDERSTANDS THE IMPORTANCE OF THE FACULTY AND THE FACULTY RESPECTS THE PRIORITIES OF THE BOARD

1. Students and faculty will refrain from public criticism of the Board.
2. Faculty who wish to communicate with the Board will do so through only through their faculty representatives.
3. Students who wish to communicate with the Board will do so only through their student representatives.
4. The only faculty and students who may communicate with the Board directly are those persons selected as representatives to the Board.
5. Students will not write petitions to the Board with complaints and demands. Petitions to the Board, as a general rule, do not make sense. (Every petition I have seen by students to the Board indicates that the students do not know what a Board is, what it does, or that the students in fact meant to petition another actor, such as the government in Richmond, rather than the Board.)
6. It is the responsibility of the faculty to learn what the priorities of the Board are at any given time. That is, what goals have they set for the College? What are they trying to accomplish? What responsibilities have they given the president? Just as the Board must understand the importance of the faculty to William & Mary, so must the faculty respect the priorities of the Board.
7. It is the responsibility of the students to learn what the priorities of the Board are at any given time. That is, what goals have they set for the College? What are they trying to accomplish? What responsibilities have they given the president? Just as the Board must understand the importance of the students to William & Mary, so must the students respect the priorities of the Board.
8. It is the responsibility of faculty and students alike, but particularly the faculty, to know something about what the Board has done over the past two decades. Knowing their record of accomplishment will explain to both faculty and students they are best off by respecting the Board, respecting the Board's priorities, and otherwise staying out of the way.
